David-Maria Turoldo, an Italian monk (Servant of Mary,) was born in the Frioul region in 1916 and died in Milan in 1992.  Essayist and playwright, he also authored numerous poetry collections.

The first two collections, Guardian of solitude (Io non ho mani,) published in 1948, and The Blessed Dead… (Udii una voce,) published in 1952 still echo post-war society, and deliver at this beginning of the 21st Century, a blatant look of the state of the world and the human condition.

These two collections presented here are translated from Italian by François-Noël Deman.

Ten years of religious life had Francois-Noël Deman living in Italy and in France.  He holds an aggregation in Religious Sciences from the ISSR in Charleroi, graduated from the Catholic University in Lyons.  He has also authored several works himself, including Peau d'Ame (The Skin of the Soul) and L’Echo d'Abel (The Echo of Abel) published by the Editions Gregoriennes.
